This project is a hybrid “Barndominium” integrating a high-clearance workshop with a private residential suite. It successfully masks industrial utility within a refined “Modern Farmhouse” aesthetic.

1. Spatial Layout

The floorplan uses a zoning strategy to separate domestic and mechanical areas:

  • Residential Wing: A self-contained 1-bedroom suite with open-plan living, full bath, and integrated laundry.

  • Central Garage: A high-volume core designed for large vehicle storage with internal access to the living quarters.

  • Carport: An open-air “lean-to” provides sheltered exterior workspace without increasing the building’s enclosed footprint.

2. Massing & Fenestration

The design utilizes Tripartite Massing: a tall central gable ($12/12$ pitch) flanked by low-profile shed roofs ($1/12$ pitch). This hierarchy reduces the visual scale. Small, high-set clerestory windows provide privacy and light in the garage, while larger double-hung windows define the residential zone.

3. Materiality & Aesthetics

The 3D renders explore three distinct visual identities using a consistent material palette: Board and Batten siding, Standing Seam metal roofing, and Natural Timber accents.

  • Sage Green: Organic/Craftsman feel; blends with rural landscapes.

  • Charcoal Grey: Modern/Industrial; emphasizes the building’s silhouette.

  • Classic White: Quintessential Farmhouse; provides high contrast against timber posts.

Technical Summary

The structure is a masterclass in functional hybridization, using efficient rectangular framing and “bolt-on” wings to create a custom, high-utility home.
